Sometimes the best wines reveal themselves only after years in barrel; sometimes high quality is obvious right from the start. And sometimes the best thing a winemaker can do is to remain discreetly in the background and let the fruit, the vineyard, and the vintage express themselves.
Merlot fruit from the Butler’s Grant Vineyard was a sight to behold in 2005; clean, deeply coloured, evenly ripe, delicious. A perfectly-timed harvest in the searing heat of the vintage sealed the deal.
We did our best to stay out of the way.
