VQA Twenty Mile Bench White wine 750mL - 11.5% alc./vol
Purchase $15.95 Creekside

Fruit for this bottling was sourced entirely from 20 year old vines at the Butler’s Grant Vineyard on the Twenty Mile Bench in Vineland, ON. This site consistently produces a very unique profile that defies exact definition, but can be termed as “exotic”, headlined by notes of jasmine and ginger in addition to more typical Bench Riesling characteristics. Whether this exotic profile is the result of very distinct terrior at Butler’s Grant, or associated more with clonal individuality is uncertain as exact clone of the vines is not known. The 2008 vintage fruit was harvested in mid-October at 19.5 degrees Brix and fermented entirely in stainless steel. Fermentation was halted based on sensory analysis. Rather than focus on creating a dry or off-dry style specifically, Creekside makes use of a traditional German nomenclature: “feinherb”, to define its Riesling style. Not legally ascribed to any particular sugar level, feinherb instead refers to a sense of balance between sugar, acidity and fruit intensity.

Reviews

“Off-dry yet tangy, this impressive domestic white serves up minerals on stone fruit and lemon, with good balance between sweetness and crisp acidity. A great aperitif, it would pair nicely with all sorts of fish dishes” Score: 89 Beppi Crosariol, Globe and Mail, Jan 22. 2010.

“This pale, slim Riesling has pretty nose of white flowers, green apple, lime and petrol with a certain spice I find common to mature Bench sites like Butler’s Grant. It's light to midweight, crisp and a touch sweet, but very well integrated. Juicy, friendly Riesling with excellent length.” Score: 90, David Lawrason, Wine Align, January 2010
