100% Riesling from the Marianne Hill Vineyard, just south of downtown Beamsville on the bench. Harvested October 5 at 18.3 °Brix with prominent acidity (YOW)! Cold ferment in stainless steel. The ferment was stopped after about 3 weeks when we felt that residual sugar and acidity levels matched in a fair fight without too much alcohol fogging things up. Bottled March 15, 2017.
Riesling from the Beamsville Bench appellation was one of the first Ontario bottlings to make all those Eurocentric wine snobs sit up and take notice of Niagara (no oence meant – we all used to think that way). So, we jumped at the chance to access fruit from the old vines at Marianne Hill Vineyard and make one of those age—worthy, steely, nervy wonders that helped put us all on the world wine map.
Spicy food! Seriously: this style of Riesling is one of the few wines that can handle the hot stuff with
panache. Think Southeast Asia. Or central Buffalo, if you prefer. Anything that came out of a body of
water will do just fine, too.
