Laura’s Red started out some 20 years back as a traditional Meritage, but we’ve always liked the flavours and textures Syrah contributes to the blend. 2016’s heat wave gave us big, tannic wines, so our 2016 version of Laura has more of the softer, textural varieties like Merlot and Syrah than usual, and therefore a bit less of the Cabs. But don’t misunderstand us: the wine is still extremely age-worthy. We just wanted you to be able to enjoy the wine in its youth and then watch it “grow up” over the next decade.
With all this attitude in one glass, you need a pairing with just as much Chutzpah! Grilled flank steak with an authentic chimichurri sauce is ideal. The bold protein softens the structure of the tannins, while the herbs of the chimichurri sauce bring out all those delightful savoury herbs from the mid-palate. Not a carnivore? Might we suggest forest mushroom risotto with a healthy helping of shaved parmesan Reggiano?
