Perfumed red cherry lifts off immediately on the nose, followed by pencil shavings, cigar box and earthy elements. The palate has some great fruit – cherry and plum to be sure but nicely complemented by dark chocolate, leather, a certain rusticity and fine grain tannins. This wine is big and the tannins are still grippy. Needs some time in a decanter or ageing in the cellar.
2016 was a hot, dry vintage and great for big, bold reds like this one. This block of Merlot from our Queenston Road Vineyard always makes a powerhouse wine with lots of structure and tannin. Built for longterm ageing, it will best be enjoyed in 2023 or later.
